What is the difference between dell xps 14 and 14z

It's a good job -- as a inch machine, this thing is definitely designed for a life on the move. With a width of mm and a length of mm, it will easily slide into a case for you to carry it across town.

It's 23mm thick which isn't as slim as ultrabooks such as the stunning Asus Zenbook UX21 , but it's hardly what you'd call fat -- we were able to easily slide it into a normal backpack and head out to the pub all our fancy events without any troubles.

Under the lid you'll find the same keyboard as on the XPS 15z. It uses rounded, isolated keys that are perfectly comfortable to type on for long periods of time. We're not keen on the font Dell has opted for on them, though -- it looks like the sort of font that would be considered 'futuristic' in the early 80s. It will undoubtedly appeal to some people, but we'd much prefer something more classic.

It may have a daft font, but it is at least backlit, which will allow you to happily type away to all your friends on Facebook at night without ever having to get up off your chair to turn on a light. The trackpad is large and is very easy to scroll around on.

It has a slightly rough texture that allows your finger to slide round it without any trouble. The trackpad buttons are large and have a pleasing click to them, which all in all makes quick operation a hassle-free experience.

At the sides of the keyboard are two grilles that house the speakers. They put out a decent enough sound for a laptop which will do fine if you want to catch up on a bit of TV using BBC iPlayer, but if you want to listen to some music or enjoy an epic film soundtrack, you'll definitely want to hook up a proper set of speakers or plug in some good headphones. Slightly annoyingly, the USB ports have been put round the back of the machine, so quickly popping in a USB stick to transfer some files is more of a hassle than it should be.

Certain conditions apply. For full details, see terms and conditions at dell. Coverage for on-the-box software plus software that was purchased separately. Simple installation and uninstall help. Restoring your system back to factory settings. The only plastic parts are the keyboard keys and screen surround, though the latter is protected by a single glass sheet that gives a seamless display impression. Finally the narrower chassis gives the keyboard itself a more pleasing proportion.

Another pleasant change is that the bezel around the screen is incredibly narrow too 1cm, to be exact. Unfortunately, the screen resolution is your standard 1, x Thanks to all that metal and a lot of attention to detail, build quality remains superb, with very solid hinge action and closely fitted panels.

In fact, the XPS 14z feels even sturdier than the 15z did, and the keyboard feels better too, putting it easily on a level with the best the market has to offer. Weight, meanwhile, is a very reasonable 1. These factors combine to make this an aesthetically superior XPS z. The only divisive elements remain the ever-so-slightly protruding rear and the hinge which looks too much like a metal shower hose.

Most of the connections — including all the USB ports — are located around the back, which looks great but makes it slightly awkward to plug in a memory stick or USB dongle, and can easily cause a memory stick to break if you tilt the laptop back while one is plugged in. At least wireless is also well up to scratch, with both Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth 3. Where the XPS 15z started going downhill a little was with its typing experience, as the feedback from its keyboard was too shallow for ideal comfort.

Though key size and layout are virtually identical on this XPS 14z, the feedback has been fixed and is now decent to good, though we might still have wished for a more defined click. Somehow, the fact that the pad is larger in relation to the laptop also enhances our subjective experience, and overall the smaller XPS z passes our usability tests with flying colours.

The Dell XPS 14z is a nicely designed, well-built inch laptop, but the XPS "z" design works better on the inch version, leaving this model feeling chunky. For all its embellishments, this doesn't feel like a premium laptop, and its performance doesn't put it ahead of the pack either. Finally, it's also one of the worst bloatware offenders we've seen in some time.

Still, the XPS 14z is worth considering, but for a less glamorous reason than Dell intended: it's simply comfortable to use.

It is compact, with a inch x resolution display, but the casing is closer to a inch notebook. We put it alongside a inch MacBook Pro and found the chassis dimensions to be similar, but the screen is slightly larger naturally. The thinnest inch notebook ever, the XPS 14z offers up strong performance and a gorgeous design.

Mobile professionals who demand a stylish, powerful PC should shortlist this one. Dank beleuchteter Tastatur kann man mit dem Rechner auch im schummrigen Licht arbeiten. Negative: Significant was found. As a notebook, it has an excellent design and build but it falls short on connectivity as you only get two USB ports, which is not forgivable when you design such a thick notebook.

Just like the Dell Adamo, the XPS 14 is stuck uncomfortably between two different notebook categories, leaving it in limbo. Fortunately, the Dell XPS 14z is one that almost can. A fine looking, sturdy and fast laptop with an attractive price tag, we've no hesitation in recommending it. This is a pity as we are sure that some users would prefer a smaller SSD over a beefier processor option.
