Why is hornbill festival celebrated




















The Nagas have a rich tradition of maintaining their unique heritage and customs. Reportedly, the Nagaland Tourism Department had reached out to all Tribal organizations in the state, and had invited them to a meeting at the Directorate of Tourism Kohima.

As a result, the Nagaland government is now gearing up to organise the Hornbill festival this year from December one, a senior official said on Friday. Loaded with a riot of colours and costumes, the festival takes place each year at the Naga Heritage village of Kisama, about 10 km from the capital, Kohima, making it easily accessible for tourists.

A visual treat, the festival showcases the traditions of various Naga tribes through splendid performances of music and dance under one roof and has become a symbol for the ethnic and cultural diversity of the entire northeastern region.

On the occasion, the Nagas also display their handicraft work like beaded jewellery which makes use of beads, wood, silver, brass, ivory and sometimes animal bone.

Tourists can also get to see exquisite Naga shawls that they can buy as a souvenir. Different shawls have different patterns which depict the tribe that the artisans come from as well as their social status.

To bring out the competitive spirit among the tribes, many sports, crafts, dance, fashion shows, beauty competitions are also organised. Tourists are often seen getting an eyeful of traditional archery, Naga wrestling and other indigenous games as well as athletic sports.

Since English is the official language of the state and as western music has deep influence on Nagaland, a rock music competition called the Great Hornbill Rock is also held and is one of the main highlights of the festival. People from all over the world come to visit this promising occasion either to merely witness or participate or sometimes, both.

To visitors, the festival offers a clearer glimpse into understanding the Naga culture better. People are welcome to partake in various extravagant dance and musical performances as well as competitions. It a very beautiful display of the cultural practices of Nagaland. The people of Nagaland are all the more kind with their helping hands and smiles. This charming festival has been compelling tourists and travelers who visit the festival over holidays.

The festival gets its name from the Indian Hornbill. The Hornbill is a common bird among the folklores and tribes of Nagaland and can be commonly seen prancing around in the forests of Nagaland. The different tribes in Nagaland address their culture with utter respect and thus find it purely essential to grace the festival with their cultural presence.

In the festival, a total of 3 lakh visitors, including tourists from abroad and other parts of the country witnessed the festival giving an estimated income of Rs 75 crore to the entrepreneurs. This is an internationally recognized festival and Nagas are very fortunate to have a very rich and colourful culture and tradition to attract tourists from around the world, he said.
